Day 2: Starting the Day at H2H

We got the guys up at 0700 today. After a bit of personal time and a good warm up, we put them through their first CrossFit workout, a sixteen-minute routine consisting of the following body weight elements:

8 Rounds of Pull Ups, 20 sec work / 10 sec rest
8 Rounds of Push Ups, 20 sec work / 10 sec rest
8 Rounds of Sit Ups, 20 sec work / 10 sec rest
8 Rounds of Squats, 20 sec work / 10 sec rest

The goal is to accumulate the highest number of repetitions for all exercises, all rounds. Cadet Gerry won decisively with 424 repetitions. Although this was not a camp record (462 reps from last year), it was an excellent effort.

Why are these cadets smiling? They joined the "club" today... the "I emptied the contents of my stomach violently after the CrossFit workout" club.

Afterwards, we had our traditional H2H breakfast: A protein drink, some fresh fruit, and a spoonful of peanut butter. Moms, don't worry. This is plenty of food to keep them going all morning.

After breakfast, we did some more grappling. This time, we worked on take downs. Specifically, the head & arm throw (or, as I affectionately call it, the "meat hook" throw). Here's a few cadets in action:

Stay tuned - there's plenty more to come from H2H.

Brittany's Corner: Day 1

What a day!

After the cadets were dropped off this afternoon, they were given a thorough safety briefing and/or orientation speech that touched on every topic from the importance of cleaning mats to the treacherous yet constructive workouts they'll be doing this week.  As the day progressed, the boys learned some basic grappling positions, as well as about the host of Crossfit workouts they'll no doubt ace and the strict, yet nutritious, diet regimen they'll be enjoying this week.

This evening, the boys enjoyed (probably???) two hot dogs apiece, sans buns, a few scoop-fulls of raw broccoli, baby carrots, pineapple and blueberries, and, to top off this truly gourmet meal, a single cheese stick per boy.  Scrumptious!  (Biased opinion as I do aid in the cooking--also, shout-out to my meal-duty boys.)

After dinner, the boys went on to practice some basics in grappling.  After this, the previously mentioned importance of mat-cleaning made a reappearance as the boys worked to bring the facility back to a sanitary state.

Day 1: Grappling for the Coveted Sleeping Spot

Two 10x5 crash pads make a great sleeping spot for 10 guys. Problem is, we have 33 cadets at this training. The solution: Grapple for 10 square feet of sleeping space. It's amazing to see how hard some guys will fight for a little piece of heaven:

Day 1: Dinner at H2H

The guys had a great meal tonight: hot dogs, raw broccoli, carrots, blueberries and pineapple slices. We will be eating a clean Zone Diet prescription this week - lots of protein, some complex carbohydrates, and a good bit of "good" fat (nuts, avacados and nut butter). Here's a link to a website on the Zone Diet (the diet of choice by many top-level athletes) by Dr. Barry Sears:

Dinner was put together by Becky and Brittany Carroll (my wife and daughter). Thanks for the great meal!

Day 1: Set Up, Check In, Orientation & Safety Briefing

We're off to a great start! We checked in 33 cadets this afternoon for H2H. About 20 guys came from out of state - one as far away as Spokane, Washington. Other states represented included VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, NY, PA, MI and OH. We've never had this many cadets before (28 was our previous record), but we'll make the most of it.

Keep your eyes open throughout the week for regular posts showing what we're up to!
